Soooo, New Year, eh? I haven't been able to bring myself to write about it, because there's not too much that has changed since December 31. I don't like to make resolutions, rather I like to take an optimistic stance on the year ahead and try my best to be a better person. However, a stomach bug that started on New Year's Day and ended on Friday nixed the first week's productivity. This past weekend was blissfully relaxing, and I was ready to get down to business today.
I was armed with a good attitude and a plan. I needed to go to our town's municipal building to apply for construction permits for the bathroom remodel. I had calls to make for a freelance article that I'm writing. And I promised a friend that we could lunch and work together at Panera, where we had plans to help each other on various projects. I was excited to be busy and eager to get these tasks done.
The permit office was a dream. After charming the women at the desk, I was riding high. That is, until I got pulled over in a speed trap. I was let off with a warning. I made my calls and headed to Panera with Lisa, where we were kicked off of the free wifi for being there for more than a half hour during peak times. Then, we moved to my house, where we got her work done and I made progress on mine. On her way out, I fell down the stairs.
Is this the New Year literally kicking me in the ass? Why is my good attitude being defeated? Could my optimism use a dose of cynicism? Or did I just have a mixed day punctuated by some bad luck? While I'm hardly one to declare the whole year a bust, it's not off to the best start so far.

It was the carpeted stairs! BTW, how is your hand? Those stairs and socks are an evil combination.
